Why you should ensure that your children's fancy dress clothes are CE certified

It might surprise you to learn that Children's fancy dress costumes are classed as a toy. From princess dresses to tiaras, capes to fairy wings, they all need to be CE certified, to ensure their safety. It's something that we felt was very important and are proud that all our products are CE certified.

To qualify for this certification products need to meet a set of European Safety standards known as EN71, these are crucial for ensuring the safety of children's toys. We are so proud that our products meet these standards. But we thought we'd share with you why EN71 is so important:

  1. Child Safety: EN71 standards are designed to protect children from potential hazards associated with toys. They specify safety requirements that toys must meet to minimize the risk of injury or harm during play.

  2. Toxic Materials: EN71 standards set limits on the presence of harmful substances in toys, such as heavy metals (e.g., lead, cadmium) and toxic chemicals. This helps ensure that toys do not pose a risk of poisoning or long-term health issues if children come into contact with or ingest them.

  3. Choking Hazards: EN71 addresses the risk of small parts that can become choking hazards for young children. It specifies size limits for small parts and requires warnings on packaging if a toy contains small parts that are not suitable for children under a certain age.

  4. Flammability: EN71 includes requirements related to the flammability of toys to reduce the risk of toys catching fire easily, which can be especially dangerous for children.

  5. Mechanical Safety: The standards cover mechanical properties to ensure that toys are designed and manufactured in a way that reduces the risk of injuries from sharp edges, sharp points, or other potentially dangerous design elements.

  6. Functional Safety: EN71 also addresses the functional safety of toys. It ensures that toys with moving parts, electrical components, or other features operate safely and as intended.

  7. Age Appropriateness: The standards often include age labeling and warnings to help parents and caregivers select toys that are appropriate for a child's age and developmental stage.

  8. Quality Assurance: Compliance with EN71 provides a level of quality assurance for consumers. Toys that meet these standards are more likely to be well-designed, durable, and safe for children to play with.

  9. International Recognition: EN71 standards are recognized internationally, making them important for manufacturers and importers who want to sell toys in European markets. Adhering to these standards facilitates trade and ensures a consistent level of safety.

  10. Consumer Confidence: Parents and caregivers can have confidence that toys bearing the EN71 certification have undergone rigorous testing to meet safety requirements. This peace of mind is essential when selecting toys for children.

In summary, EN71 standards play a crucial role in protecting children from potential hazards associated with toys, ensuring that toys are safe, age-appropriate, and free from toxic substances. Compliance with these standards helps create a safer environment for children's play and contributes to consumer confidence in the safety of toys.
