Cheap, generic costumes can be tempting, especially when a party invitation arrives at short notice. But many parents discover the same problem: the dress is worn once, complained about twice and then disappears into a drawer with a broken seam or a scratchy waistband. Buying one beautiful piece, instead of several cheap costumes can be a kinder and better value choice.
Fewer pieces, more magic
The first reason is longevity. A well made dress is not just for one party. It can become a birthday outfit, a weekend favourite, a holiday treat, been worn on World Book Day option, or to the theatre, becoming the centerpiece of countless adventures. When a child loves how a dress feels, they do not need a particular occasion to wear it.
The second reason is comfort. Cheaper costumes often focus on instant visual impact, while comfort is treated as an afterthought. If the fabric is stiff, the seams are rough or the skirt is scratchy, the child may not keep it on and it gets tossed to one side. A proper costume should be designed for movement, sitting, dancing, eating, reading and playing – comfort should be the priority, because as adults we wouldn’t settle for clothing that made us hot and sticky, so why should our children?
How to decide what’s good value
The third reason is less waste. Children grow quickly, and no garment lasts forever, but buying fewer, better pieces can reduce the cycle of disposable costumes. A dress that can be washed, stored carefully and passed down, has a longer story than something bought in a rush and discarded after a school day.
Quality also changes how a child sees the item. A beautiful dress becomes part of their play. It inspires stories, characters and confidence. It may even become one of those childhood objects remembered years later: the dress they wore for every important adventure.
That does not mean families should never buy affordable pieces. It means the best value is not always the lowest price. The question before making such a purchase should be, how many times will this be worn, and will my child feel happy in it?
At The Fairytale Wardrobe, our pieces are designed to be not just beautiful, but also comfortable. Each one of our dresses is cotton lined, there are two cotton petticoats under our signature soft, tulle skirt. And we’ve had hundreds of parents of tell us how comfortable their little one’s find our dresses/coats, which is THE biggest compliment. Everything is also CE certified, something we’re incredibly proud of, as we are aware that not all costumes, available on the general market have this certification.
